SUMMARY:DHMF Roadside Casino
DESCRIPTION:Roadside Casino plays forthright\, political punk that showcases a love for reggae\, funk and alternative music. Bird Polacheck sing-screams at center stage with scratchy vocals that encapsulate the spirit of the group. Bassist Caleb Rouse-Littler and guitarist Rob Wunderlich formed the band in early 2023. When Polacheck joined\, the band really got moving. Teddy Jeddeloh later jumped in on drums to complete the sound. Their tongue-in-cheek references play well against the band’s unabashed spirit\, with song topics touching on police abolition\, religious fundamentalism\, postcolonial theory\, feminism and skateboarding.

SUMMARY:DHMF The Leave Alones
DESCRIPTION:The Leave Alones is a new guitar-based band featuring veteran Duluth rockers Cole Holstrom\, formerly of Black 13\, and Dave Mold of Wyatt Famous\, a group that ended its run in 2012. Mike Ballard and Erik Sather round out the lineup. The Leave Alones posted two demo singles\, “Sara” and “Big Lenny\,” on Spotify to launch the band last year. Both songs stomp and grind like classic “Louie\, Louie” garage rock run through a 1990s Seattle grunge machine. The group promises emotional\, self-deprecating songs of love\, loss and trauma with a little dark humor to lighten things up.

SUMMARY:DHMF Willem Dafoe Fan Club
DESCRIPTION:Willem Dafoe Fan Club is an experimental modern slowcore band consisting of Hollis Sparhawk and Noah Ruona. Both were born in Duluth\, started playing music in Duluth\, and met in Duluth. They use both 1980s funk instruments and more traditional guitars and drums enriched with distortion to create a distinct sound that will kick off Homegrown’s New Band Showcase. Both songwriters find inspiration in unique instrumentation\, allowing them to explore soundscapes inspired by everything from Elliot Smith to Joy Division.

SUMMARY:DHMF Sidestreet Detour
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2022\, rock three-piece Sidestreet Detour has performed on dozens of stages across the region — from tiny beer joints like Jack’s Place in Superior to the massive Bayfront Festival Park main stage. In January\, the band shook the house at the Pequaywan Inn for its legendary winter Hawaiian Luau deep in the Minnesota northwoods. “We play classic covers from several decades\, plus a growing list of original music — which is slowly becoming our primary focus\,” said keyboard player Stephanie Jago\, who shares vocal duties with guitarist and frontman Russ Sackett and drummer Bart Porter.

SUMMARY:DHMF Neatneatneat
DESCRIPTION:Neatneatneat is a punk band that sounds like a head-on collision between an ice cream truck and a convertible with a very loud radio. Drummer Shanna Willie said the trio was formed as a response to the “everyday bullshit that blocks our path to ease and wellbeing.” She used the common four-way stop standoff as an example of frustration. “It becomes this silly little nicety\,” she said. “Neatneatneat was put on this earth to vent grievances.” Clancy Ward and “Misisipi” Mike Wolf join Willie in the trio.

Now a solo artist\, Nelson has been to Nashville and back\, and hasn’t tired of performing and creating new music. He will be joined at Homegrown by drummer Jerry Siptroth and bass guitarist Taylor Shykes. Nelson’s self-titled album was released in 2020\, and he recently recorded his followup\, The Music Saved My Life\, at Sacred Heart Music Center.

SUMMARY:DHMF The Three Ring Goose Circus
DESCRIPTION:The Three Ring Goose Circus blends poetry\, music\, clowning and general chaos for an off-beat celebration of the sublime. Each member performs multiple artistic disciplines\, with apparatuses such as a saw\, hatchet\, kazoo\, synthesizer and flute. With Henry Kneiszel and Jess Morgan’s spoken word\, Alyssa Lucas’ horn and balloons\, and Joseph Anderson’s musical instruments all working together\, the various disciplines enhance one another and offer a variety of stimuli. Kneiszel started the group in 2022 with the mission of creating attention-conscious work that’s unlike anything the audience has seen before.

SUMMARY:DHMF Gnarwals
DESCRIPTION:Sean Moria has been singing and playing guitar with drummer Jake Daire since their formative years as musicians and songwriters. Along with bassist Austin Korkowski\, Gnarwals tends toward a groovy and rocking alternative-punk sound. Sets typically include a range of fun\, bouncy jams to heavier\, head-banging ragers with a hefty emphasis on instrumentals. When the songs call for vocals\, they’re clever\, playful and sharp enough to put eyes out.

SUMMARY:DHMF The Gavin St. Clair Trio
DESCRIPTION:If James Taylor grew up in waist-deep Minnesota winters\, learned to surf on Stoney Point\, and routinely played guitar around illicit Park Point bonfires\, he would be Gavin St. Clair. St. Clair writes evocative\, nostalgic love songs that crystalize and shine like frost on a frozen bay window. His 2023 release\, Rollin’ it Back\, features a collection of sharp\, well-played Americana that could fit on a late-period Beach Boys album or an early Justin Vernon record. Performing with a trio that includes Alex Piazza on bass\, Owen Mahon on drums\, and Alex Nelson on keys.
